| This costume was worn by “Louise Jefferson” portrayed by actor Isabel Sanford from the television sitcom “The Jeffersons”. The full length sheer coat is constructed out of a Chiffon multi colored water print material and includes a matching head band. The burgundy maxi dress has a plunging neckline and spaghetti straps. The label “Leon Bennett” is sewn onto the matching headband.
Ms. Sanford can be seen wearing this chiffon coat and headband in “Once a Friend”, (Season 4 Episode 3), when George’s Navy friend Eddie comes to visit and reveals that he is now trans-gendered going by the female name Edie. The chiffon coat is also notably seen in “Uncle George and Aunt Louise” (Season 4 Episode 22), when guest star Gary Coleman visits as the young nephew “Raymond”.
The Jefferson’s was an American sitcom broadcasted by CBS from 1975 through 1985. A spin-off of from the sitcom “All in the Family”, The Jefferson’s “moved on up” to the upper east side of Manhattan and began living as an affluent black family. The series ran for 11 seasons with a total 253 episodes, making The Jefferson’s one of the longest running sitcoms in US history. Also noted for its controversial topics including racism, suicide, and gun control, which was taboo for syndicated television in the 1970’s. The show was nominated for 13 Emmy awards, and actress Isabel Sanford who played Louise, won Best Actress in 1981. This item is in good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Costume Designer.
