Mr. Phoenix wears the brown leather sandals and jeans when he meets with his girlfriend, “Deputy D.A. Penny Kimball” (Reese Witherspoon), on a park bench to talk about the missing person’s case Doc is working on. The blue jeans were also worn in the scene when Doc is lying on his office OBGYN table, smoking a joint, and then moments later while walking down the hallway. The sandals were worn throughout the film as his signature footwear and were on display at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Marketing) in Los Angeles. The red flannel shirt was worn when Doc goes to visit “Hope Harlingen” (Jena Malone) at her home to discuss the mysterious case of her husband, "Coy Harlingen" (Owen Wilson), a supposedly-dead saxophonist whom Hope thinks is still alive.

GQ Magazine interviewed costume designer Mark Bridges about the wardrobe he used in the film and his research process Bridges commented on how he selected Doc Sportello’s infamous “mandals”:

“They're these funny sandals that are so typical of that late '60s period. I've actually gotten letters on my personal website asking me where I got those sandals. People tell me their dad and uncle used to wear them. They're really a classic men's sandal that I actually think a few designers today have started to reissue. Joaquin spent a lot of time walking around in his bare feet to get into character. But I just thought, basically, you've got this guy who lives on the beach and prides himself on his freewheeling existence so he doesn't like to wear shoes unless he's in disguise.” Read the full interview HERE

These garments are in good screen worn condition and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
