This costume was worn by the character “Waddington” portrayed by actor Toby Jones in
the 2006 film “The Painted Veil”, co-starring Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, and Leiv
Schreiber. The costume includes a vintage salmon red Chinese robe with ruby red lantern
pattern, tie waist and two lower patch pockets, and includes two white tank tops. Costume
production hold tag attached with (“Waddington, Day 5, Sc. 51 + 61" ) handwritten in black
ink.
Mr. Jones wears this robe when "Kitty" (Naomi Watts) goes to Waddington's house to ask
for his assistance delivering a letter to “Charlie” (Liev Schreiber), her lover. Waddington
makes an offhand comment on how many women Charlie has had "flirtations" with, leading
Kitty to rip up the letter and cease trying to contact Charlie. Much later in the film, after
rescuing Kitty from an angry mob, "Walter" (Edward Norton) goes to Waddington's house
for drinks. Kitty later joins them. After getting somewhat drunk, Kitty and Waddington talk
about love.
These garments are in excellent screen worn condition and are accompanied by a letter of
authenticity from the costume house.
