GLADIATOR – Roman Soldier (Background Actor) Tunic with Breeches and Cape

This costume was worn by a background Roman soldier in the Oscar winning 2000 epic “Gladiator”. The costume consists of pants with leather wraps, short sleeve tunic, and cape. The custom made garments are constructed of out of a brown/rust colored wool fabric and were hand distressed for use in the film.

In the beginning of the film, Maximus (Russell Crowe) leads the III Felix Legion of the Roman army to a conclusive victory against Germanic Barbarians at Vindobona, bringing an end to the war on the Roman frontier, thus earning the admiration of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). The costume is seen worn amongst many of the roman soldiers during the opening battle beneath their armor, as well as being worn by background soldiers celebrating their victory outside and within the tents. Although not worn by Mr. Crowe, he can be seen wearing a similar same garment without the cape, when he escapes on horseback from his own execution. His tunic costume is worn up until he finds his murdered family, and is picked up and sold as a slave. The belt detail on the breeches is beneath the tunic and seen when Maximus stands in a slave lineup.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Richard Harris. Russell Crowe won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in “Gladiator”, and the film also won the Academy awards for Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Effects and Best Sound. Accompanied by a letter of Authenticity from the costumer.
