This turtleneck shirt was worn by the character “McGoon” portrayed by the actor Bern Hoffman in the 1959 musical adaptation of the popular Al Capp comic strip “Lil’ Abner”. This grey turtleneck shirt has black letters spelling “MC GOON” on the front. Internal Paramount Pictures costumer’s label sewn inside the collar with “Hoffman” handwritten in slightly faded ink. The collar and sleeve cuffs are somewhat discolored and distressed due to age.
Mr. Hoffman can be seen wearing this garment throughout the film, including several musical numbers, including McGoon’s wedding ceremony to “Daisy Mae” (Leslie Parrish), and worn in promotional stills and posters for the film. “Li’l Abner” is a 1959 musical film based on the 1956 Broadway musical version of the comic strip by Al Capp. The musical starred Peter Palmer as “Li’l Abner”, Leslie Parrish as “Daisy Mae” and was directed by Melvin Frank. Portions of the film included new original scores and were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Musical Score in 1960. This garment is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
