This screen used prop was featured in the 1998 spy-thriller, “Enemy of the State.” This handheld NEC gaming device includes all the original components, along with the prop cartridge that was pivotal in the film. The cartridge includes a custom sticker featuring a two-headed sumo wrestler with the printed text “PCMCIA PERSONAL FILES” and “200 MB CAPACITY”. The serial number “1Y50086LA” can be found on the back of the Game Boy, along with the remains of a “VOID” sticker.
Zavitz (Jason Lee) uses this prop to download a video proving the murder of the Congressmen, which was all captured by his bird watching camera. NSA agents are trying to break through his door and Zavitz escapes onto his roof. He runs through buildings but is eventually trapped in a lingerie boutique, where he slips the device into Robert Clayton Dean’s (Will Smith) shopping bag. The item is featured prominently again when Dean finds former NSA agent “Brill” (Gene Hackman) and tells him that Rachel Evans (Lisa Bonet) is dead. Brill is hesitant to stay around Dean but asks to see the toy. The prop is last seen at Brill’s base in an abandoned building, when the toy’s cartridge is removed to analyze its data.
Directed by Tony Scott, Enemy of the State is a spy-thriller about a unit of rogue National Security Agents who assassinate a US Congressman and try to cover up the murder. Jason Lee’s character “Zavitz” captures the incident on film and passes it onto Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) setting a chain of events that ultimately has Dean running for his life. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the film went on to gross 250 million dollars worldwide. The prop is in good screen used condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
