This leather work coat was worn by the character “Tristan Ludlow,” portrayed by actor Brad Pitt in the 1994 film, “Legends of the Fall”. The coat is a vintage leather jacket that was aged specifically for the production. Once production wrapped the costumers had the garment cleaned by a company that’s specializes in leather. During the cleaning process the lexol and mineral oil that was used to distress the coat was removed. The Golden Closet hired professional western costumer Richard La Motte to restore the coat to the screen used state. The belt that is included with the coat is the original belt, however it was not used on screen. The belt used in the production was sewn onto the garment and stitch marks are visible were it was attached.
Mr. Pitt is notably seen wearing this coat during the gripping final clash between him and the O’Banion brother’s tussle over selling liquor in Helena. Outside the Ludlow home, they’re waiting for Tristan, and during their final confrontation his father William Ludlow comes out concealing a rifle under his bear coat. He opens fire on the vengeful men, saving Tristan’s life but leaves him to live on the run from authorities. Directed by Edward Zwick, this epic film stars Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn and Julia Ormond. The film is based on the 1979 novella of the same name by Jim Harrison. This garment is in excellent vintage stage worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
