This shirt was worn by the character “Celie Johnson” portrayed by actress Whoopi Goldberg in the 1985 motion picture “The Color Purple”. This original 1800’s hip length top is constructed out of a blue and white striped cotton material with button front, ruffle hem and cuff. There is minor wear due to age and small repairs have been made. Ms. Goldberg wore this shirt in the scene when “Shug” (Margaret Avery) arrives at the house drunk and meets Celie for the first time.
“The Color Purple” is an adaptation of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning book by Alice Walker. The film was directed by Stephen Spielberg and starred Whoppi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. The story focuses on the suppression of African American woman living in the south during the early 1900’s through the 1930’s. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and generated $146,292,009 dollars worldwide.
