This dress was worn by the character “Penny” played by actress Janet Jackson in the television series, “Good Times”. This red “Heidi” style dress includes a blue and yellow floral print with yellow sleeves and neckline, three black plastic buttons and the original manufacturer’s tag attached by “Sears, Roebuck and Co.”. A small brown stain can be found on the neckline. An original Polaroid taken of Ms. Jackson wearing the dress includes the costumer’s note “#0515” indicating its use in the fifth season.

Ms. Jackson wears this dress during the episode, “Penny’s Christmas” (Season 5 Episode 12 which aired December 21, 1977) while at the Evan’s family Christmas party. This is a pivotal episode in the series, as Penny has been struggling with life in the projects, dealing with an abusive foster parent until the Evans family intervened. Penny is not yet an official member of the family and her custody is challenged when social worker Ms. Dobbs (Alice Ghostley) reconsiders her adoption to Willona Woods (Ja’net Dubois). It takes some convincing but Ms. Dobbs feels the Christmas spirit and the love from the family announcing that Penny can officially be adopted.
