This day dress was worn by "Edith Bunker" portrayed by Jean Stapleton in the finale episode of “All In The Family”, "Too Good Edith" (S9 E25). The red and green stripe day dress with two lower patch pockets and matching belt was custom made. Ms. Stapleton wore the dress throughout the finale episode of the series including the last scene between Archie and Edith. In the final episode, Young Dr. Shapiro diagnoses Edith with phlebitis, and orders her to stay off of her feet for extended periods. However, with the bar being busy due to the St. Patrick's day holiday, Edith feels compelled to ignore the advice despite her rapidly deteriorating condition. She retires to their bedroom for the final scene, when Archie professes his true love and admiration for Edith.
Archie, “If the whole damn world was to go to the dogs, as long as I had you standin by my side, or sittin by my side, or laying here like this by my side, everything would be just ok. I been blowin my own horn for a lot of years, I am gonna tell you somethin.. “I Aint Nothin With Out You”.
Edith, “Ya know something Archie, you’re a Pip a real Pip”. Fade out
The final scene is considered one of the most romantic and heartfelt moments in television history. The series finale is ranked #7 of the 15 most watched television finales of all time with 40.2 million viewers. The characters "Archie" and "Gloria" had their own spin-off shows, but this was the last time "Edith" was seen on-camera because the writers killed off her character, which was show cased in the series premiere of "Archie's Place".
This garment is in good screen worn condition and was acquired directly from the head of the wardrobe department for Embassy TV (formerly TAT/Tandem) Betsey Potter. The department also supplied wardrobe to Sanford and Son, One Day At A Time, Maude, Jeffersons, Good Times, Married With Children, and other iconic television shows produced by Norman Lear and Embassy TV.
This garment was acquired through inner industry trades or purchases and is in very good screen worn condition.
