This costume was worn by the character “Sofia” portrayed by Oprah Winfrey in the 1985 motion picture, “The Color Purple”. The costume consists of an original 1920’s overcoat and cotton day dress. The floor length forest green coat is constructed out of a heavy green wool material with large check print and embroidered applique around the lapel and cuff. The navy blue cotton day dress has red rick rack and paisley trim with square patches and matching tie belt. Both garments are in excellent condition.
“The Color Purple” is an adaptation of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize winning book by Alice Walker. The film was directed by Stephen Spielberg and starred Whoppi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. The story focuses on the suppression of African American woman living in the south during the early 1900’s through the 1930’s. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and generated $146,292,009 dollars worldwide.
