THE PALEFACE Peter Potter (Bob Hope) Cream Window Pane Period Coat

This period style coat was worn by the character “Painless Peter Potter,” portrayed by actor Bob Hope, in the 1948 motion picture, “The Paleface.” The custom made coat by Macintosh is constructed of cream windowpane plaid wool with flap pockets at the waist. The interior of the jacket has a Paramount Pictures stamp and the original tailoring label with the name “Bob Hope” and production date “March, 1948” handwritten.

Mr. Hope wore the jacket at the end of the film when Potter and “Calamity Jane” (Jane Russell) climbed into a carriage after getting married. Jane insists on driving and immediately gets pulled out of the carriage and dragged behind it, whereupon Potter looks into the camera and says, “What do you want, a happy ending?”

“The Paleface,” won an Academy Award for Best Song (Original Song) for “Buttons and Bows” written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. Hope performed the song in the film and it became the greatest hit of his singing career in terms of record sales.
