This outfit was worn by “George Jefferson”, portrayed by actor Sherman Hemsley in the television series “The Jeffersons”. The three piece vintage 1970’s suit was made by “Sy Amber EST.1951 Southern California”, and manufactured by “Michel Faret 33 Artigues “ and has both company labels sewn inside the coat. The orange and black paisley tie made by “Bullock’s Southern California” has a Velcro closure, which separates the tie into two pieces, making costume changes easier for Mr. Hemsley.

The suit is initially seen in “Lionel cries Uncle” (Season 1 Episode 7), when Uncle Ward comes to visit but is dismissed for being an “Uncle Tom”. Mr. Hemsley can be seen wearing this tie along with his three-piece suit in “The Lie Detector” (Season 3 Episode 4), while preparing for a family photo shoot with Louise, but the session is put on hold when Lionel delivers news that he’s quit his new job. The tie is paired again with the same suit in “The Retirement Party” (Season 3 Episode 6), when George is offered a fortune to sell his business but refuses after realizing it would affect all his old friends. It is also seen later with a different suit in Season 4 Episode 17, “Lionel Gets the Business”, when George puts his son in charge of his cleaning business, but soon realizes his changes are going to hurt the company.
This outfit was one of George Jefferson’s signature costumes and was worn throughout the series, including episodes 7, 12, 24, 33, 41, 43 and 50. Sherman Hemsley was also featured on the cover of “TV Guide” (June 21-27, 1975) wearing this suit.
The Jeffersons was an American sitcom broadcasted by CBS from 1975 through 1985 and was produced by the legendary Norman Lear and Embassy TV (formerly TAT/Tandem) who are also known for “One Day At A Time”, “Maude”, “All in the Family”, “Sanford and Son”, and “Good Times”. Originally a spin-off from the sitcom “All in the Family”, The Jefferson’s “moved on up” to the Upper East Side of Manhattan and began living as an affluent black family. The series ran for 11 seasons with a total 253 episodes, making The Jefferson’s one of the longest running sitcoms in US history. The show is also noted for its controversial topics including racism, suicide, and gun control, which was taboo for syndicated television in the 1970’s. The show was nominated for 13 Emmy awards, and actress Isabel Sanford who played Louise, won Best Actress in 1981. This item is in good screen worn condition and was acquired directly from the show’s costume designer and head of the Embassy TV wardrobe department.
