This dress was worn by the character “June Carter Cash” played by actress-musician Jewel Kilcher in the 2013 television movie, “Ring of Fire.” The original 1960’s emerald green dress is constructed out of a slipper satin material. The gathered material at the bust line was added during the production by a safety pin and rhinestone earrings were added to hide the pin. There is visible damage on the left shoulder that occurred during filming. Jewel wore a guitar strap that shattered the fabric and minor repair work to the dress is evident.
Ms. Kilcher wears this dress when June Carter first meets Johnny Cash backstage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Johnny introduces himself and quickly announces to her that he will marry her someday, and jokingly they both reveal their wedding rings. Also seen shortly after in the alleyway behind the theater when June sees her husband “A.P. Carter”(John Doe) passionately kissing another woman. The dress is also featured in promotional stills for the movie.
Ring of Fire is a Lifetime made-for-tv biopic about the life of June Carter Cash and her marriage to Johnny Cash, a relationship challenged by his struggle with drug addition. Directed by Allison Anders, the movie starred Jewel Kilcher and Matt Ross as “Johnny Cash”. In the film, Jewel performs the title song “Ring of Fire”, one of Johnny Cash’s most famous songs written by his wife June. The item is in good screen worn condition with visible damage on the left shoulder and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
