This vintage dress was worn by the character “Elise Clifton-Ward” portrayed by actress Angelina Jolie in the 2010 motion picture “The Tourist”, also starring Johnny Depp. The knee-length fitted dress is constructed of gray mohair and has ¾ length bell sleeves and a side-draped pocket at the left hip. The original designer label was lost or removed from the dress during filming.

The dress was created by legendary fashion designer Charles James and was one of a limited series he designed for the Samuel Winston line in the 1950’s. James has been called “America’s First Couturier”, and established a reputation for his distinctive designs in the late 1940’s / early 1950’s. Mr. James won numerous design awards over the course of his career, received a John Simon Guggenheim fellowship in 1975, and was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame in New York in 2001. His work has been featured in exhibitions and retrospectives at The Brooklyn Museum and Art Institute of Chicago, The Fashion Institute of Technology, and in the permanent collection of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Elise wore this dress in the scene where she travels by boat through the canals of Venice to the Interpol headquarters to meet with “Inspector John Acheson” (Paul Bettany), and provides him with information to catch the notorious thief he’s been tracking. The actress appeared wearing the dress on the cover of Entertainment Weekly Magazine’s November 2010 “Holiday Movie Preview” issue. The dress was also specifically mentioned in Vicki Woods’ cover story for the Dec. 2010 of Vogue Magazine with the quote “Costume Designer Colleen Atwood used an original Charles James day dress some people I know would kill for.”
