This denim hat is a custom made promotional piece given to the cast and crew, it is the exact style hat worn by the character “JJ” played by actor Jimmie Walker in the television series, “Good Times”. The character’s catch phrase “Dyn-o-mite!” is embroidered under the brim and the “JJ” initials are embroidered repeatedly on the headband. “Cali-Fame of Los Angeles” made all of the screen worn hats including this version.
Mr. Walker can be seen wearing a version of this hat (without the embroidery) throughout the entire six seasons and it was most often used in the first three. The hat is synonymous with the character of “JJ” and is easily the most iconic piece of wardrobe from the series. Mr. Walker also wore the same style hat in his stand up comedy album, “Dy-no-mite” released in 1975 at the height of the character’s popularity.
Good Times was an American sitcom broadcasted by CBS from 1974 through 1979. A spin-off from the sitcom “Maude”, the series ran for 6 seasons with a total of 133 episodes. The series starred Esther Rolle as “Florida Evans” and John Amos as “James Evans, Sr.” who live with their three children “JJ” (Jimmy Walker), “Thelma” (Bern Nadette Stanis) and “Michael” (Ralph Carter), in a project apartment in Chicago. The show won three Golden Globe nominations for performances by Esther Rolle and Jimmie Walker. This item is in good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Costume Designer.
