This “Rutherford Police Department” officer’s uniform was worn by the character “Officer Don Leslie Orville” portrayed by Wayne Knight in the science fiction comedy series “Third Rock From The Sun”, starring John Lithgow and Jane Curtin. The costume was custom made for the actor’s use and consists of a black nylon patrolman’s jacket with a fake fur collar, light blue long sleeve shirt, pair of black pants with royal blue side stripe, black leather belt, and black tie. The shirt and jacket are complete with the original Rutherford Police Department patches that were custom made for the production, and the shirt’s label includes the character’s name “DON” handwritten on the manufacturers tag.
Mr. Knight wore this outfit in several episodes from the hit series when interacting with the alien “Solomon” family and in notable scenes with his unlikely love interest “Sally Solomon” (played by Kristen Johnston). His character was introduced late in the first season of the series in 1996, and appeared in a total of 78 episodes before the show’s final season in 2001. The uniform was acquired directly from the studio after the series ended and is in very good screen worn condition. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
“Third Rock From The Sun” received numerous awards and nominations over the course of its impressive six-year run, including Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor (Comedy) to John Lithgow, Outstanding Supporting Actress (Comedy) to Kristen Johnston, and costume designer Melina Root was awarded Outstanding Costume Design for a Series in 1997 for her work on the production.
