This frock coat was worn by the character “Count Fosco” portrayed by legendary character actor Sydney Greenstreet in the 1948 motion picture “The Woman in White” starring Alexis Smith, Eleanor Parker, and Agnes Moorhead. The garment is constructed of beige wool material with faux lower flap pockets, wide lapels, and matching velvet covered buttons on the front, back, and cuffs. Internal Warner Brothers label with “date #-29-47, Prod. 671, Green Street” hand written in black ink. There is slight fading overall and small moth holes on the left sleeve, lapel, and rear lower vent area.
Mr. Greenstreet wore this coat when the evil Count Fosco is confronted by “Marian Halcombe” (Alexis Smith), who has arrived to beg him to release her cousin “Laura Fairlie” (Eleanor Parker). As Fosco reveals the reasons behind his cruel behavior towards Laura, his insane wife “Countess Fosco” (Agnes Moorhead) enters the room and stabs him for causing the death of her illegitimate daughter.
“The Woman in White” was based on the classic novel by Wilkie Collins and had previously been adapted for the silver screen several times prior to the 1948 release, and was later adapted for subsequent television movies and mini-series. The men’s wardrobe department for the film was headed by Bernard Newman, previously known for designing gowns on such classic Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ films as “Top Hat” and “Swing Time” among others.
The garment is in vintage screen worn condition with several tiny moth holes in the fabric and minor evidence of age. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
