This jacket and skirt was worn by the character "Mary Gray," portrayed by actress Ella Raines, in the 1944 motion picture, "The Suspect." The gray with red trim period jacket and matching floor length skirt with ruffled hem has the original costumer's label sewn inside with the actress' name "Ella Raines" handwritten in faded black ink.
Ms. Raines wore the costume in several scenes of the film as well as in a promotional images for the production alongside her co-star Charles Laughton. In the film, Raines portrays a young down on her luck woman who is befriended by Philip (Laughton), a well to do man trapped in an unhappy marriage. When his wife learns of his friendship with Mary she threatens to expose him to scandal, causing him to murder her rather than face the harsh judgment of society in London at the turn of the century.
