This 1970’s tuxedo jacket was worn by “George Jefferson” portrayed by actor Sherman Hemsley in the television series “The Jeffersons”. This garment is constructed of a burgundy and white plaid print material with silver metallic thread detailing and velvet trim on the lapel, pockets and cuff. Manufactured by After Six and accompanied by a wardrobe rental tag. The company label is sewn inside the garment and includes the numbers “4758 2509” handwritten on the label.
Mr. Hemsley wore the tux jacket in Season 5 Episode 7 “Me and Billy Dee” when "George", "Weezy" (Isabel Sanford), "Florence" (Marla Gibbs), and "Helen" (Roxy Roker) are waiting in the Jefferson’s apartment for Billy Dee Williams to escort them to a charity event. "George" landed Billy Dee as the speaker by pretending to be author “Alex Haley” on the phone with Mr. Williams. In a hilarious turn-of-events "Florence" assumes that the man coming to the apartment is an impersonator and she interrogates Mr. Williams, questioning his knowledge of himself. Mr. Hemsley also wore the garment in Season 5 Episode 14 "Louise's Reunion", when "Florence" "Louise" and "George" are discussing Louise's old high school flames and wondering if any of them will be at her reunion, making "George" very uncomfortable. At the reunion, a handsome ex beau asks “Louise” for a dance and it's too much for "George" to handle.
The Jefferson’s was an American sitcom broadcasted by CBS from 1975 through 1985. A spin-off of from the sitcom “All in the Family”, The Jefferson’s “moved on up” to the upper east side of Manhattan and began living as an affluent black family. The series ran for 11 seasons with a total 253 episodes, making The Jefferson’s one of the longest running sitcoms in US history. Also noted for its controversial topics including racism, suicide, and gun control, which was taboo for syndicated television in the 1970’s. The show was nominated for 13 Emmy awards, and actress Isabel Sanford who played Louise, won Best Actress in 1981. This item is in good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Costume Designer.
