This costume was worn by the character “Penny Chenery” portrayed by actress Diane Lane in the 2010 motion picture “Secretariat”. The outfit consists of a blue and white sleeveless cotton dress with pleated skirt and white bow at the neck. The outfit is complete with the original costumer’s tag attached listing film title, character name “Penny”, outfit description, and assorted production notes.

The actress wore this dress in the scene where Penny has a casual dinner with her family after assuming control of her father’s stables. While her daughters discuss going to Chile, Penny explains to one of them that she may have to miss the opening of her play in order to attend her first horse race in New York, but promises to catch the first available return flight.

“Secretariat” was based on the true story of Penny Chenery, a housewife and mother who agreed to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables. Despite having no familiarity with horseracing, Penny (with the assistance of trainer Lucien Laurin) eventually ended of fostering the horse “Secretariat”, which became the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years. The screenplay was partly inspired / suggested by the book “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion” written by William Nack, who also was given a cameo appearance in the film. The movie received a Satellite Award nomination for “Best Cinematography” in 2010.

The garments are in excellent screen worn condition and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
