This HERO costume was worn by the character "The Riddler," portrayed by actor Jim Carrey, in the 1995 motion picture, "Batman Forever." The custom made costume includes a green wool jacket with black felt question marks, a light green velour jumpsuit with a black felt flocking question mark print and two zippers on either side of the neck with “Jim Carey N. 1” (sic) handwritten inside the collar in black ink. This jumpsuit is the hero suit and is one out of nine made for the film. The original costumer’s tags are attached with “’#1’ Show: ‘Batman 3’ Char: ‘Riddler’ Actor: ‘Jim Carrey’ CG#: ‘2, 2A & 5’”. The costume is paired with black and green leather shoes size 10, made by “Hardcore Footwear London”, and includes the original tag with “#1” handwritten in black ink. Due to Mr. Carrey’s excessive sweating during filming, the jumpsuit’s original vibrant green color has faded, and there is a small dark stain on the side of the left knee.
Mr. Carrey initially wears the full costume when the Riddler enters the compound of Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), having used his brainwave device to locate the lair. This upsets Two-Face until the Riddler proposes to join forces against Batman. The jumpsuit alone is worn throughout the film and notably worn when the Riddler and Two-Face commit crimes across Gotham and later absorb brainwaves through TV devices disguised to steal people’s intelligence quotient. On Halloween, the Riddler sneaks into Wayne Manor and finds the entrance to the Batcave, where he playfully throws bombs, nearly destroying everything.
Directed by Joel Schumacher, "Batman Forever," stars Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman, Chris O'Donnell, Michael Gough, and Drew Barrymore. It was nominated for three Academy Awards and a Golden Globe award. Producer Peter MacGregor-Scott stated that for the costume design, the Batman suit was redesigned along the lines of a more "MTV organic, and edgier feel." The film was a box office success, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 1995.
