This shirt was worn by the character, “Private Ames” played by actor James Brolin in the 1965 war film, “Von Ryan’s Express.” This military shirt was custom made for the production by Camhiretta, and a white stitched label reads “Jim Brolin ‘Ames’ Ch. EC”, along with a hand embroidered “TQ” which is likely from a subsequent production. The garment was hand distressed for the film.

Mr. Brolin can be seen wearing this shirt after escaping the Nazi prison with other Allies, and riding a commandeered train led by Col. Ryan (Frank Sinatra). Private Ames and other Ally soldiers fight off German fighter planes while riding the roof of the train they’ve seized. Also seen when attempting to hold back German soldiers while other Allies replace damaged train track in order to escape.

Von Ryan’s Express was directed by Marc Robson and starred Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard. The film was based on the novel by David Westheimer, and became one of Sinatra’s most successful films. It tells the story of a group of Allies who carry out a massive getaway by capturing a freight train and fleeing the German-occupied Italy, trying to reach Switzerland. The garment is in good distressed condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
