This costume was worn by the character “Lucien Laurin” portrayed by actor John Malkovich in the 2010 motion picture “Secretariat”. The outfit consists of a custom made black tuxedo jacket with soutache braid trim, pair of matching pants, and a white After 6 tuxedo shirt with gray edged ruffles and black diamond patterns on the front. The vintage jacket and pants were custom made by Studio City Clothes and have the tailoring label sewn inside with the date “Aug. 18, 1961” and an illegible name written in faded ink. The costumer’s hold tags are attached listing the film title “Secretariat”, character name “Lucien”, and assorted production information. Mr. Malkovich wore the garments during the sequence at the Belmont Ball when Lucien greets Secretariat’s owner “Penny Chenery” (Diane Lane) prior to the Belmont Stakes horserace.

“Secretariat” was based on the true story of Penny Chenery, a housewife and mother who agreed to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables. Despite having no familiarity with horseracing, Penny (with the assistance of trainer Lucien Laurin) eventually ended of fostering the horse “Secretariat”, which became the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years. The screenplay was partly inspired / suggested by the book “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion” written by William Nack, who also was given a cameo appearance in the film. The movie received a Satellite Award nomination for “Best Cinematography” in 2010.

The garments are in excellent screen worn condition and are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house. Presented by The Golden Closet, your premier source for iconic screen used movie wardrobe, props, and collectible music entertainment memorabilia.
