This hat was worn by the character “Tony Stark” played by actor Robert Downey Jr. in Marvel’s 2013 blockbuster “Iron Man 3”, also starring Guy Pierce, Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. The hat is made of felt, and includes the actor’s initials “RDJ” handwritten on the interior. Distinctive moth holes can be screen matched with what is visible in the film.

Mr. Downey Jr. can be seen wearing this hat after Tony Stark takes it from “Harley”, a precocious young boy in a rural town of Tennessee. Tony is investigating the remains of a local bomb explosion and it’s connection to “The Mandarin”. Earlier, The Mandarin had destroyed Tony’s Malibu home leaving his Iron Man suit damaged, so he investigates while it recharges. Tony tries to disguise himself wearing local clothing as well as the cowboy hat to enter a news van. Inside the van, the hat is hung up as Tony works on a laptop. He hacks into files from “Advanced Idea Mechanics” and sees the origins of the human “bombs” as test subjects of Aldrich Killian’s “Extremis” project. Tony determines that AIM sold the Extremis weapons to The Mandarin.

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, and follows the success of the first two films and the Marvel superhero crossover film “The Avengers”. In this sequel, Tony Stark is trying to recover from his experiences within the Avengers Team and is suffering from posttraumatic stress. He begins to investigate the terrorist organization led by “The Mandarin” after his head of security “Happy Hogan” is hospitalized from an explosive attack. As of 2013, the film has grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing film of all time.
