This “Wonderboy” bat was used by the character “Roy Hobbs”, portrayed by actor Robert Redford, in the 1984 motion picture “The Natural.” The bat was custom made specifically for the production and is an exact replica of a Louisville Slugger from the turn of the century. The iconic “Wonderboy” and lightning bolt logo and was hand etched into the bat. In order to make the design authentic, the property master had a young boy sketch the logo onto a napkin, which was wood burned into the bats. Mr. Redford utilizes this bat in various scenes throughout the film.
The Natural was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1985, including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction Set Decoration), Best Music (Original Score), and Best Actress in a Supporting Role to Glenn Close for her outstanding performance in the film.
