This pair of coveralls was worn by a female background character in the 1942 musical motion picture classic “Star Spangled Rhythm”. The short sleeved garment is constructed of light blue thick cotton and has plastic buttons down the front, two pouch pockets on the breast, and the interior of the garment has the original Paramount Pictures label sewn inside with the name “M. Kinglsey” handwritten in slightly faded ink. The garment is in good overall condition with some minor fading due to age.
This garment was worn during the sequence for the song “Swing Shift” featuring musical and dance performances by Marjorie Reynolds, Betty Rhodes, and Dona Drake. In the movie, the sequence is being filmed in a mock airplane hangar on the Paramount Studios lot, and the soundstage is populated by an assortment of different characters including male and female Airplane Mechanics wearing coveralls such as this.
“Star Spangled Rhythm” was one of Paramount’s WWII era “Star Parade” films that featured performances by all the studio’s top contract players of the time, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Fred MacMurray, Dorothy Lamour, Paulette Goddard, Dick Powell, Betty Hutton, Eddie Bracken, Veronica Lake, Alan Ladd, Betty Hutton, and many more.
