This yellow silk chiffon dress with light green ribbon accents was worn by the character Marion, played by model Dovima in the iconic 1957 musical FUNNY FACE, starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, with costume design by the legendary Edith Head. Dovima was said to be the highest paid model of the 1950's, and her close working relationship with photographer Richard Avedon, upon whose career FUNNY FACE was based, led to her part as the vapid supermodel in the film. This dress is a focal point in the pivotal scene in a Greenwich Village bookstore where photographer Dick Avery (Astaire) and his troop of assistants commandeer the space for a photo-shoot. Avery stays behind to help clean and decides to make the unhappy salesgirl, Jo Stockton (Hepburn), into the next famous "face". FUNNY FACE was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1958, including Best Costume Design. This dress has been modified from its original floor length for use in a later production and the original shpoulder straps have evidence of distress due to normal production use and age. This garment has the name Dovima clearly written inside, and comes accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
