This tuxedo jacket was worn by the character George Jefferson portrayed by Sherman Hemsley in the Norman Lear television series, “The Jeffersons”. The vintage navy blue crushed velvet tuxedo coat by Academy Award Clothing Los Angeles is size 39 Small.
Mr. Hemsley wore the coat in S5 E17 "Louise's Award", throughout the entire episode when "George" may have influenced "Louise's" chances winning the “Volunteer of the Year” award for her commitment to the Help Center. Knowing how much this award means to “Louise”, “George” bribes one of the judges to ensure “Louise” wins. Little does “George” know, “Louise” was going to win the award and no bribe was necessary.
The Jeffersons was an American sitcom broadcasted by CBS from 1975 through 1985. A spin-off of from the sitcom “All in the Family”, The Jeffersons “moved on up” to the upper east side of Manhattan and began living as an affluent black family. The series ran for 11 seasons with a total 253 episodes, making The Jeffersons one of the longest running sitcoms in US history. Also noted for its controversial topics including racism, suicide, and gun control, which was taboo for syndicated television in the 1970’s. The show was nominated for 13 Emmy awards, and actress Isabel Sanford who played Louise, won Best Actress in 1981.
This garment is in good screen worn condition and was acquired directly from the costume designer and head of the wardrobe department for Embassy TV (formerly TAT/Tandem) Betsey Potter. The department also supplied wardrobe to Sanford and Son, One Day At A Time, Maude, All in the Family, Good Times, Married With Children, and other iconic television shows produced by Norman Lear and Embassy TV.
This item is in good screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Costume Designer.
