This frock coat was worn by the character “Jack O’Leary” portrayed by the actor Don Ameche in the 1937 motion picture “In Old Chicago”, starring Tyrone Power and Alice Faye. This frock coat is constructed out of a heavy black wool material with three button closure and two patch pockets. Internal “United Costumers” label with “Don Ameche” handwritten in fountain pen, internal “TBS Wardrobe” stamp on collar, and “UCI 199 suit” stamps in both sleeves. Designed by Royer.
Mr. Ameche wore this coat in several scenes throughout the film, most notably when he tells his mother he has his first court case. “In Old Chicago” is a fictionalized account of how the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was started. Mrs. O’Leary (Alice Brady) owns a cow that kicks a lamp over and starts the fire. At the time of the film’s release, it was one of the most expensive movies ever made. This garment is in excellent condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
