This black tuxedo jacket was worn by the character “Henry Gondorff,” portrayed by legendary actor Paul Newman, in the 1973 motion picture, “The Sting.” The single button period tuxedo has two welt pockets at the waist, a single breast pocket on the left front, and a black silk satin shawl collar. The 1930’s style tuxedo jacket was custom made for Mr. Newman’s use on the production and the interior is complete with the original Western Costume Company label sewn inside with the name “Paul Newman #6,” made to order # “214C-1,” and sizing information clearly typed in black ink.
Mr. Newman wore this garment during the climactic end of the film when he and partner Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) pull off their elaborate confidence scheme in a staged betting parlor. In the sequence, Gondorff pretends to be shot in the gut by a Federal Agent while wearing this jacket, prompting their “mark” to flee the scene leaving behind a suitcase full of money.
“The Sting” remains one of Mr. Newman’s most popular films and won seven Academy Awards in 1974, including one to famed costume designer Edith Head for her outstanding work on the project.
The garment is in good screen worn condition with some evidence of age to the silk satin on the edge of the lapel with a small cigarette burn.
