This costume was worn by the character “Sally” portrayed by actress Marilyn Miller in the 1929 Warner Bros. film, “Sally”. After the film was made, the costume was altered for subsequent “Follies” productions and theatrical stage productions. Included are markings from “Miss Miller”, Warner Bros “Sally”, MGM, Bermans of London, Studio Roma Madrid “4/6/53”, Ziegfeld Follies, Moss Theatre, “Rezaire D Alusune”, and “on loan J.C. Ziegfeld NY”.

From the years 1907 to 1931, the “Ziegfeld Follies” were a series of grand stage productions on Broadway in New York City. It was a mix of lavish entertainment and fancy variety acts from Vaudeville, including top entertainers of the day like W.C. Fields, Paulette Goddard, Bob Hope, Marilyn Miller and Will Rogers. In the mid 1930s and 1940s, Metro Goldwyn Mayer created several feature films based on Ziegfeld and the Follies.
Marilyn Miller was one of the most popular musical stars on Broadway during the 1920s and early 1930s. With diverse talents in acting, singing, and dancing, she was an entertaining force that audiences endeared. Florenz Ziegfeld recognized her talents and had her perform for his Ziegfeld Follies in 1918. She was soon finding stardom, which led to more Broadway productions and films. Because of her success, her first name became one of the most popular female names of the 1930s and even the iconic actress Marilyn Monroe got her stage name after being told from a casting director at 20th Century Fox that she reminded him of Marilyn Miller.
