This tuxedo coat was worn by the character “John Shawnessy” portrayed by actor Montgomery Clift in the 1957 drama, “Raintree County”. The black cutaway coat is constructed out of black wool and has a silk file lapel. The MGM label is sewn inside the left breast pocket and has “Monty Clift 1692 5087” hand written in black ink.

Mr. Clift wears this in coat in the gala scene with Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor) after moving to the south. During the party the couple discusses succession and slavery with Susanan’s “Cousin Sam”. Sam’s wife interrupts the conversation to escort John away to the dance floor, during which she tries to convey gossip about Susanna and her “history”.

“Raintree County” stars Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Eva Marie Saint. Based on the novel, the epic film tells the story of John Shawnessy who leaves his high school sweetheart Nell Gaither (Eva Marie Saint) for the Southern belle Susanna Drake, but her emotional instability leads to the end of their marriage. At the time, this film was MGM’s most expensive American based film, and was a success at the box office. This item is in excellent vintage screen worn condition and comes with a letter of authenticity from the costume house.
