This faux leather document pouch was used onscreen in the 1998 motion picture “The Mask of Zorro” starring Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The pouch includes a lot of 19 screen used handwritten documents that were custom made for use on the production by the film’s Art Department. The prop is constructed of thick textured paper with cardboard backing and has an interior pouch and flap cover with two leather thong closures on the front. The textured paper exterior was hand distressed to resemble aged leather.
This document pouch was integral to the film’s plot and appeared onscreen in several pivotal scenes throughout the picture. A nearly identical pouch perhaps meant to be an “earlier” version first appears in the opening sequence of the film when the evil villain “Don Rafael Montero” prepares to execute a group of Mexican peasants prior to fleeing his Spanish command of the city as the troops of General Santa Anna approach. Before getting ready to leave he summons his lackey “Don Luiz” (Tony Amendola) and presents him with the document pouch containing deeds to several Spanish properties in California to hold onto as a reward for his loyalty. Later in the film after the two are re-united, Montero uses this distressed version of the document pouch to contain the documents along with a leather treasure map of his secret gold mine “El Dorado”. This specific pouch is clearly seen on a desk in Montero’s office as he and “Capt. Harrison Love” (Matt Letscher) heatedly argue about Zorro’s threat to their plans. While the two are distracted, “Young Zorro” (played by Antonio Banderas) hangs unseen from the rafters above and uses his sword to retrieve the map. Zorro later drops to the floor with the folded map in his mouth after the two exit the room with Capt. Love in possession of the leather document pouch.
The prop pouch is in hand aged/distressed condition and complete with the original handwritten script documents as seen in the film. The documents have suffered some moisture staining during storage (see images above). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
