This day dress was worn by “Edith Bunker” portrayed by actress Jean Stapleton in the television series “All in the Family”. This green and red floral print short sleeve cotton day dress with red piping on the stand collar and sleeves has pleats down the sides, self-belt, and rear zip closure. Internal “The Wardrobe Workroom” label attached with “100628 w/Belt” handwritten in black ink. Costumer tag attached with "Yellow/green/ red print w/ red piping house dress w/ tie belt, size 12".
Mrs. Stapleton wears this garment during the iconic opening credits of Season 9 while "Archie" and "Edith" are sitting at the piano singing “Those Were the Days”. She later wears the day dress in Season 9 Episode 3 "Reunion on Hauser Street" while consoling her friend, "Blanche Hefner" (Estelle Parsons), who was just dumped by her exterminator boyfriend. "Blanche" is expressing regret for leaving her husband for the exterminator so "Edith" suggests they go down to Archie's Place so she can work things out with him. This dress is also worn in Season 9 Episode 14 "A Night at the PTA” briefly during a montage of "Edith" and "Stephanie" (Danielle Brisebois) practicing the piano for their upcoming performance at the elementary school's PTA night.
All in the Family was an American sitcom broadcasted on CBS from 1971 through 1979. The series revolved around the life of a working class man and his family, and was considered revolutionary for its time, discussing topics such as racism, homosexuality, and women’s liberation. The series ran for 5 consecutive years as the top television series in the United States, and won 22 Primetime Emmy’s and 8 golden globes. All in the Family ran for 8 seasons with a total 189 episodes.
This item is in good screen worn condition and was acquired directly from Betsey Potter. Ms. Potter took over costume design for “The Jeffersons” after the first four seasons from Rita Riggs. She worked on the show from 1976 to 1980, and later went on to establish and oversee the wardrobe department for Embassy TV (formerly TAT/Tandem). Ms. Potter has maintained and housed these garments after “The Jeffersons” series ended.
This item is in excellent screen worn condition and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
