This costume was worn by the character “Eleanor 'Ellie' Apley” portrayed by actor Peggy Cummins in the 1947 motion picture “The Late George Apley.” The two-piece period (1900) blue dress includes a jacket with shawl velvet lapel, two oversize patch pockets, and black trim with button detail. The skirt has an internal bias label with “4499-09 Peggy Cummins” handwritten. And 20th Century Fox dry cleaning tag. The jacket was made for the film, but ultimately not worn in the final version.
Ms. Cummins wears this skirt when she tells her parents that she is going to the market to have lunch with her love interest, "Howard Boulder" (Charles Russell). “The Late George Apley,” revolves around “George Apley” (Ronald Colman), a wealthy member of Boston's upper class, as his proper life and social circle are threatened by his daughter Ellie and son “John” (Richard Ney) when they fall in love with non-Bostonians.
