This Hawaiian shirt was worn by the character Thomas Magnum, portrayed by actor Tom Selleck, in the iconic hit 1980’s television series “Magnum P.I.” Mr. Selleck wore the shirt multiple times throughout the latter part of the series, including “Summer School” (Season 5, Episode 13), “Way of the Stalking Horse” (Season 6, Episode 17), and “Missing Melody” (Season 7, Episode 11).
The dusty blue rayon shirt is made in the classic Hawaiian style with short sleeves, button front, and a large-scale floral pattern in shades of blue and cream with yellow and green trailing lines. The shirt has the original “Heidi” brand label in the interior collar.
In the episode “Summer School”, (air date January 1, 1986), Robin's teenage nephew R.J. arrives at the estate to be reformed and educated by Higgins. R.J. decides to impersonate Magnum and manages to get him targeted for death. In “Way of the Stalking Horse”, (air date February 20, 1986), Magnum is unwittingly hired by an impostor hit man to help locate his victim. During the hit, Magnum is shot, bringing him close to death, and he becomes hell-bent on going after the hit man to claim revenge. In “Missing Melody”, (air date December 3, 1986), T.C.'s children, Melody and Bryant, come to visit him in Hawaii, but Melody is kidnapped and held for ransom. Magnum, Rick, and Higgins help in the rush to either raise the ransom money in time, or find whoever snatched Melody.
Magnum P.I. ran for eight seasons, from 1980 to 1988, and was consistently one of the highest rated shows on US television. Tom Selleck won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Thomas Magnum in 1984.
