This original production blueprint was the design for the “Castaway Hut” used by “Mr. and Mrs. Howell” (Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer) in the classic television series “Gilligan’s Island”, which ran from 1964 to 1967. Blueprints such as these were used to aid the film’s Art Department / Set Designers in constructing the trademark “primitive” sets and backgrounds used on the immensely popular series, and offer a fascinating insight into the making of the series and the “behind the scenes” details required to create the show’s unique look.
The blueprint is titled “Hut 6, Detail 6” and lists detailed information on the scale, dimensions, and materials required for its fabrication. The lower right corner has assorted information regarding the design and lists the show title, production number, stage and set numbers, unit art director (Bill Smith), blueprint designer (“Russ”), picture title “Permanent Set”, and the set title “Int. Hut 6 – His & Hers” (indicating it was the hut to be used by The Howells). The document also has the production date “5-22-64” indicating that this was the design created for pre-production of the show’s first season.
The exterior and interiors of the castaway huts were trademark backdrops for numerous gags and plot setups in “Gilligan’s Island”, and this rare piece of production related art will make a great centerpiece in any collection of classic television memorabilia. The blueprint is in very good condition with some slight discoloration due to natural aging and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity.
